According to eyewitnesses so far, there was a battery explosion during the lithium battery inspection/packaging process. I hope that a clear root cause analysis and countermeasures will be presented.


The consequences of incidents that occur at OT sites are serious.


According to the Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency/Central Incident Investigation Team, in 2019, an explosion incident caused by a runaway reaction in a synthetic reactor occurred at another OT site in Korea, resulting in the deaths of 3 workers and injury to 1 person. The cause of the incident was as follows:

  1. Excessive catalyst injection: Runaway reaction > Rapid temperature increase in reactor
  2. Exothermic reaction cannot be cooled: Environment where temperature control is impossible
  3. Improper raw material injection and failure to deactivate within the reactor: Solvent leakage/activation > Explosion


The root causes of OT incidents can be diverse, but among these, since there is insufficient data/logs for additional investigation and analysis of 'system abnormal symptoms', they are often concluded as simple 'malfunction' or 'abnormal operation' of unknown cause.

However, these scenarios can also be sufficiently related to OT cyberattacks. This is because the above scenarios are possible due to unauthorized access, remote code insertion, and execution of vulnerable OT systems by attackers.

I hope that a safer environment is created in the OT sites where our family/acquaintances work.
